I believe that hard work conquers all. Throughout my life, I’ve had many experiences that have molded me into who I am today. As a little girl, I remember playing multiple sports at a time, such as basketball, soccer, fast pitch, and volleyball. On top of my practices and games, I also had to balance out school as well as a social life.

When I was fourteen years old, I tore my ACL. It was during my first soccer practice of the new season with a new coach. This was my first surgery, first crucial injury, and first experience that helped me realize who I am. I had surgery April 11Th 2005 and began physical therapy two weeks later. My physical therapist told me that I was the youngest patient they’ve ever had with a torn ACL. Watching my friends and teammates excel in soccer made me want to recover as fast as I could. I realized that the only thing I could do was work that much harder.

Before school, I would get up at five to warm up my knee, do my physical therapy, and ride me broken stationary bike in the garage. Then, after school, I’d drive to Tacoma for more physical therapy and ice everyday before I went to bed. I couldn’t afford to buy a one hundred and fifty dollar fitness ladder, so I built one in my garage to gain my quickness back.

After three and a half months, I was released to run. Running became a habit, and soon I was released to play with no contact. At seven months I was playing with very few restrictions. My doctor told me that my quick recovery was owed to my self discipline and hard work. I gained ten pounds in four months, and became ten times stronger as well as fit.

Although I did have my days of frustration, depression, and self doubt, I had to keep working hard. I believe that hard work conquers all. I believe that virtually anything can be done if someone works hard enough for what they want.

Gould Questions pg. 349-354

1. Gould says that sometimes scientists think that what they did with this particular experiment it is okay to make assumptions instead of pulling out facts. They don’t base it on enough knowledge and factual finds. These facts are not necessarily true although people tend to believe them.

3. In paragraph four it is apparent that Gould questions the scientific methods rather than the findings themselves. Gould does a nice job of stating the other essays so called “facts” and establishing and supporting it with why it is wrong.

6. In paragraph 9-12 Gould’s point is to show how much he disapproves and disagrees with Broca’s study. Paragraphs 9-12 develop Gould’s point by showing that things such as weight and height to not make a difference about some one’s intelligence.

7. Gould’s purpose in developing this point as he does is to show readers that what they are doing is spreading lies. His purpose in developing this is to show people how naive these scientists are and that they need to consider the facts that are being used in Broca’s study.

9. Gould brings together both the argument and his actual argument about the conclusions drawn to show that women of all kind are affected by Broca’s research. That these so called “scientific facts” affect everyone alike.

I believe that Huxley is saying that everything we love will ruin us, such as the television. Orwell thinks that what we hate will ruin us. That not reading or becoming literate will ruin us because we hate to learn it. I believe Orwell is right because that will ruin our society and make us derprived from knowledge. Huxley is saying that what we love will ruin us, because becoming couch potatoes will turn our brains to mush. It is then asking us to write a synthesis essay explaining whether or not we support or disagree with Postmans opinion.

sanctuary: Harry Potter and the movie questions

1. The text uses different film genre to comment on the Harry Potter story and movie to give both a different tone, and by making small, choppy sentences.

2. Nikki Giovanni’s purpose in opening with the scene of drums and elephants is to give the story a dramatic affect and to relate it differently for the Harry Potter perspective.

3. The affect of the line from Gwendolyn Brook’s poem the Giovinni uses to make the transition to Harry Potter is to make a smooth transition to change the tone of things.

4. I think she is criticizing the fantasy novels like Harry Potter, as well as criticizing the original Harry Potter novels. By saying that he lived, like all of us and the cliche fantasy novels.

5. The text Giovanni uses is a stream of consciousness commentary. I think she chooses this form to give her paper a different tone and make it have a different affect on the reader who is used to having a typical essay or poem.

6. I think Giovanni’s interpretation of the Harry Potter movie is more in depth and well thought out than mine. Reader’s and viewers can interpret the Harry Potter movies and novels anyway that their imaginations will let them.

7. It is suggested that the reader will view a different form of writing. Sanctuary could mean and ideal place in ones mind. Like a vacation, although I think Giovanni is refering to the use of ones imagination.

2. Godbey- “Television is the 800 – pound gorilla of leisure time.” Needham – “Spending a quiet evening at home.” Kunstlet – The outside world has become an abstract filtered through television, just as the weather is an abstract filtered through air conditioning.”

3. The additional information has a positive affect in supporting Putnam’s point. It helps justify reliable resources.

4. The purpose of footnote 14 is to show us the affect of t.v. has on children. It gives additional information that may seem obvious to the reader to put in perspective the statistics of how ridiculous the consumption of television is among children.

He doesn’t like to watch

1. Yes, the interview does address that threat. The interview also takes the reader into consideration how much our generation is influenced by tv.

2. I think the interviewer is bias against having a way to turn off television. This is apparent in her questions because she asks, “What do you think of someone going into a sports bar – where people have gone to watch a game – and turning the television off there? Do you think that’s a justified use?”

3. I think the tone of the interview is biased and opinionated. I think the tone affects the credibility of both the interviewer and the interviewee because the interviewer had well thought out questions, but the interviewee had in depth answers that were justified as well.

4. The interview addresses the political nature of the television turn off week by showing that America is addicted to television and we are anti social when a television is on around us, but when television is off, we begin to act more like humans.

TV turn off week

1. The purpose of this poster is to get people to turn off the television and experience living. The illustrations address this purpose by having a step by step way to having fun.

2. The poster creates a tone of direction and persuasion. Yes, the words help the reader to focus and expand their minds intellectually through reading.

3. yes, the airline safety card and the posters connection does add to its effectiveness because an airline card tells you how to be safe in an emergency situation. And the poster is doing the same thing, the television is a hazard, and in an emergency situation we should turn it off.

Is Media Violence free speech?

1. They agree that some t.v. violence is not appropriate and it is a form of speech and they slightly agree on the v chip.

2. He uses japan as an example to prove that they have more vile media violence, but less real-world violence in Japan than America. Gerbner response is surprised and claims that media violence is one of many factors.

3. Gitlin supposrts the v chip and Gerbner does not support the v chip.

4. Gerbner believes that the result of excessive tv violence is from producers, citizens, and marketing. Gitlin believes that the result of excessive tv violence is from today’s culture.
